Solid Waste Disposal

Solid waste is regulated in Idaho under a joint partnership with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).  This partnership is agreed upon through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two agencies.  Click here to read the MOU.  DEQ has complete jurisdiction over the solid waste program with the Health Departments responsible for the inspections and plan reviews of the operation plans and closure plans.

All landfills are inspected by the Southeastern District Health Department at least once a year.  Landfills are broken into two basic types; a) Municipal landfills and b) non-municipal landfills.  Municipal landfills are landfills that accept household waste.  Non-municipal landfills accept items such as yard waste, concrete, construction waste debris, trees, limbs etc. Within our 8 county district we have 22 landfills consisting of  7 municipal landfills and 15 non-municipal landfills.
